Youth Food Movement’s Sydney chapter spent the day at Melanda Park, a free range pig farm in the Hawkesbury, New South Wales.
Talking to owners Matt and Sue Simmons, it was clear they have a passion for rearing pigs that enjoy a happy life, including plenty of fresh produce and the best of amenities – even creating little sheds and shallow ponds for them to cool off in summer. Pigs sunburn easily, you see.
It was a searing hot day with plenty of dry wind, being inland from the coast. All the better to finish our tour with a swim in the river by the farm and an afternoon picnic with plenty of almond and cashew chocolate dip.
